Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy was born in 1978. She is a Pakistani journalist and documentary filmmaker. Sharmeen has been the pride of Pakistan and has brought home many accolades for her home country in the art of Film & Documentary making.
She won an Academy Award for her documentary, Saving Face in 2012 and became first Pakistani to win an Oscar. She won an Emmy for her documentary, Pakistan: Children of the Taliban in 2010. She is also the first non-American to win the Livingston Award for Young Journalists.
Oscar winning filmmaker and creative director of Pakistan’s first animated feature film ‘3Bahadur’, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attended the 2015 TIME 100 Gala in New York City on Tuesday, 21st April 2015. From Diane Von Furstenberg to Kanye West, the world’s most influential people were invited to the gala. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is seen here in attendance at the TIME 100 gala pictured alongside Barbara Walters, legendary American journalist and TV personality and Harvey Weinstein, leading American film producer and film studio executive. Sharmeen wore an ensemble by Pakistan’s premiere couturier HSY at this event.
The Pakistani president conferred the Hilal-e-Imtiaz on Sharmeen on 23 March 2012, for bringing honor to Pakistan as a filmmaker. Time magazine named Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy in their annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2012. Sharmeen was ranked 37th on Desiclub.com’s list of the 50 Coolest Desis of 2009.
Obaid-Chinoy was born in Karachi. She attended the Karachi Grammar School and she received her B.A. from Smith College in 2002.
