Covid-19 has meant a dreary, six-month dearth of major red carpet moments – the kind where the stars dazzle the world in diamonds the size of gobstoppers. Fortunately, the 77th Venice Film Festival has come to the rescue, with plenty of high jewellery and big gemstones on display. Not that this year’s festival is business as usual. Red-carpet outings have been more muted than in years gone by, and focused on grown–up chic and wearability, rather than carat–weight.
