20 Umrah pilgrims killed, 29 injured in Saudi bus crash

Saudia Arabia (Riyadh): A bus crashed carriying Umrah pilgrims to the holy city of Mecca on Monday, 28th March, killing 20 people and injuring more than dozen others. The bus they were travelling in to perform Umrah in Makkah overturned, hit a bridge, tipped over and caught fire.

The accident, which occurred due to brake failures, took place in Aqaba Shaar in Asir governorate, according to reports.

“According to preliminary information we have now received, the number of deaths in this accident reached 20, and the total number of injuries was approximately 29,” the state-affiliated Al-Ekhbariya channel reported.

It said the victims had “different nationalities” but did not mention them or provide a breakdown yet.

Emergency services, including a Red Crescent team, were quickly dispatched to the accident site and injured travellers were transported to nearby hospitals.
