‘Some Say I am Sweety‘ is song by the legendary Naheed Akhtar, from the 1978 movie ‘Kora Kaghaz‘. The movie also stars Barabara Shareef and Zeba Bakhtiar.
The movie hasn’t managed to stay popular with the times, but the song refuses to be forgotten. It has in some ways been remembered as a joke, for it’s interesting lyrics.
But is that all ? What makes the song so evergreen?

The Lyrics
The lyrics to the gleeful song are rather simple and romantically direct. The words have a nice flow, and the music matches the happy mood very well.
The unique thing is that the lyrics come off as being translated from Urdu . That I believe is the magic secret for the song, the content is of the song, is otherwise typical. A typical happy love song.
But the Urdu to English lingo makes the lyrics stay in your mind, just like the best catchy songs.
Like who didn’t giggle when she said , ‘Make me partner of loving, I want to be a wife’.
I also really want to know what the lyricist meant when he said ,’Give me directive‘.
Composition and Singing
In all honesty the song is a bop. It’s easy to listen to and fun in the addictive sense. Naheed Akhtar is an amazing singer and she obviously made the song work, with all the confidence in the world.
The music has a nice nostalgic tone and feel to it, and leaves you wanted if not to dance then defiantly to jump around or go around in circles.
Just like Barbara Shareef.
Be Forgiving
I’ve noticed that a lot of people while getting a good laugh out of the song, feel like this creativity is something to be ashamed of.
But it’s not like the song is some cheap attempt at trying to be something it’s not. It’s being itself, and is an original treat.
We should not ashamed to creativity or our local lingo.
Instead we should just enjoy the song and appreciate the joy and nostalgia it brings.
