Walking on Air: Hawa Sandals And Spiritual Sufism

The Hawa sandal is something that caught my attention for the visual and creative masterpiece alone. I wonder why nobody thought of a design like this before.

The sandal is a traditional Peshawari chappal but with a literal wind addition on top.

The concept is a collabaration between the company Markhor and the artist Saks Afridi.

The artist Saks Afridi is originally from Peshawar himself, but now resides in New York. His works tries to understand the feelings of both being on the inside and outside. And of course creating an amalgamation of different cultures, realities and time.

He is also creating work that explores the possibility of ‘Sci-fi Sufism‘, bringing in the of fusing spirituality with machines. It’s a new perspective as literature and films always sees machines as a polar opposite of all things spiritual and humanistic.

Afridi had this to say about the venture, ‘ I grew up wearing the Peshawari Chappal and still do, it’s part of my identity. The idea of adding wings stemmed from a story in the SpaceMosque Project.’
