5 drinks that are bound to quench your thirst in Lahori heat

April was never this record breaking hot! Lahore alone feels like it’s been shifted to mercury. With the intense heat that melts you away, it is really important to stay hydrated. Hydration is, after all, really important since the body depends on water to survive. Our body needs water to maintain its temperature, remove the waste and maintain overall good health. If you want to stay alive and make it through the day (which I believe everyone wants), we give you a list of the most amazing drinks that will keep you feel refreshed throughout the day (yayy!) Unless you decide you are worth melting for. 😉

1. Mint Margarita

This is the most refreshing lemon soda infused with mint leaves. We all know about it. We have it while eating out. We love it. It is our most favourite. But going to your favourite café and spending over a drink when heyy… you can make it at home. Stuff you need for prep:

  • Water ½ cup
  • Sugar ½ cup
  • Salt ½ tsp
  • Sprigs of mint 3-4
  • Lemon Juice of 3 lemons
  • Crushed ice
  • Sprite/ 7Up

In a food processor blend water, sugar, salt, mint leaves, lemon juice and ice together. Fill up half the glass with sprite/ 7UP and half with the mint mixture. Yes, its that easy and takes only five minutes.

2. Lassi

Lassi hails from India and Pakistan and can take on many flavours and combinations. Whether you go for the traditional yougurt, sugar (or salt, as you wish) and milk based ingredients or be as innovative by adding mango, blood orange, strawberry whatever you like – just blend it in!

3. Detox Water

The trend of healthy food/ drink intake has gripped the nation! Detox water is any infused water recipe that flushes the toxins from your system and improves your health. What more? It helps in weight reduction! It has zero calories and makes you feel full and refreshed! Not only does it boosts your metabolism but keeps your skin beautiful too (Heads up for all the ladies out there!) You can be as creative as you want to trying different combinations. The traditional and most popular one is the cucumber + mint + lemon combo which is especially cooling on hot days. Others include watermelon + strawberry, orange + blueberry, mango + ginger and what not. These flavoured waters are simple and inexpensive to make and you can always have fun making your own combinations.

4. Gannay ka Ras

This old lost drink is a favourite of many. But due to hygiene issues people hardly remember it. It is now getting popular since places like “Juices Island”, “Juice Corner” and even “Metro Cash & Carry” has started it. Extracted from sugarcane, a glass of this drink not only quenches the thirst but is an instant energy booster. Loaded with abundant carbs and minerals and containing zero fats (really? 😲 ) it keeps you in good shape too. For the weight watchers, it contains only 15 calories. For the beauty queens, it cures the acne and protects skin from ageing. Who wouldn’t want to take a sip of this natural sweet?

5. Sattu

Sattu is an old age remedy to beat the heat. It is high on fibre and low on sodium. Made after powdering roasted chick peas, gram flour, its health benefits are such that is it popularly called “desi Horlicks”. Not only does Sattu battles with the heat stroke but also is a great stamina booster when we feel exhausted and low on stamina due to the heat. Sattu contains most of the necessary nutrients like proteins, fibre as well as vitamins and antioxidants, an essential for sound hair health. So what are you waiting for? Have Sattu drink twice a day for the amazing benefits!

So, this summer, instead of opting for a soft drink go for one of these. They are healthy and easy on the pocket as well and you will definitely feel the difference!
