Five seasons to follow if you love travelling

When it comes to drama serials and soap operas, there is no dearth in the choices of what to watch. Ranging from classics like Roots to teenage obsessions like Pretty Little Liars, there’s something out there for everybody. This also includes that rare individual who enjoys traversing Planet Earth, preferring to spend time and money on experiences rather than possessions. Indulge in this list of five top seasons to begin watching if you’re fond of travelling.

1. Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern

An amalgam of travel and cuisine, this show follows a man in his pursuit of all sorts of foods from all sorts of cultures. With a total of nineteen seasons and a high rating of 8.0 on IMDB, the show has garnered a large number of fans who enjoy watching this brave chap swallow the oddest foods, including horrors like balut and a chicken’s uterus. Of course, you’re going to need nerves of steel for this, but it’s a great way to widen your horizon on the different types of cuisines around the world.

2. Departures

This is for the backpacker traveler. It depicts three friends, Andre, Scott and Justin, who backpack through areas as diverse as Ethiopia and Siberia; they feed hyenas, scale active volcanoes and ride reindeer. Totaling three seasons, the globetrotting action is bound to keep you at the edge of your seat!

3. Amazing Race

Aired on CBS, this shows 11 teams who take off on a 25 day race around the world. The teams have to arrive at certain spots, from where they are led to the next destination, until they finally arrive at the final spot. Teams who fail to make it in time are eliminated, until one team is left which wins 1 million dollars. What a way to show different cultures and obstacles around the world!

4. Parts Unknown

Starring former chef Anthony Bourdain, this is a professionally and beautifully filmed documentary. Anthony travels the world and speaks to locals over dinner at each destination. The show also includes less-than- famous destinations like Libya and Congo.

5. An Idiot Abroad

Karl Pilkington swears he will never travel the world, so of course, his two friends, Rickey Gervais and Stephen Merchant make him do just that. In this number, Karl is thrown into all sorts of random circumstances (like being dropped into the Amazon jungle or climbing Mount Fuji) and his reactions to his surroundings are recorded. With the immature humor, this show is probably the closest to reality.

Other classic travel shows include House Hunters International, which follows wannabe international-home owners – you can catch a real glimpse of living standards abroad. There is also Globe Trekker and Explore22, the latter of which shows egalitarian youths trying to fulfill their respective moral obligations around the world. Thus if you’re a travel-addict, you can never complain that no show is to your liking. Just do a bit of research and you’ll be amazed at what turns up!
