Instagram Worthy Food Photography

Every time you go out to eat, along with enjoying the food you also enjoy taking mouth-watering pictures of the food so that your friends on Instagram or Facebook can feel the pain. Don’t deny it- you know it’s true! We all do it. So here are a few tips that will help you take exceptionally tempting pictures of your food and make your followers go crazy!

Lighting

Never underestimate the power of good lighting as it can make all the difference. The best light is indirect daylight—a shady spot on a sunny day is the holy grail of natural lighting conditions. It gives your food a bright, even glow and doesn’t tint colors in the way that indoor lighting typically does.

Composition

When taking a picture, imagine that the frame is divided into a nine-part grid (like Sudoku) and adjust the angle such that the main subject is placed along those lines or at their intersections. This is called the rule of thirds and is known to yield more appealing images.

Angles

It is also important to choose the angles wisely. A flat, round pizza will usually look best shot from directly above, while a tall dish of ice cream might benefit from a 45° angle to keep the focus on the three-dimensional contours of the scoop. The best way to find the perfect angle is to experiment around with different angles and see which one looks most flattering.

Be Quick

It is wise to keep everything ready before the food actually arrives because taking the perfect picture can take time and food doesn’t keep its appetizing looks for long. You need to get the perfect shot before the food starts to melt/ collapses/ wilts and while it looks as fresh as possible.

Props

Now that you have understood the basics, it’s time to have fun! Be creative with the props and the backgrounds. Put a lot of thought into the color and shape of the plate that you choose. Also add dimension and personality to the photos by placing accessories like utensils or napkins in the background. Adding some herbs or other condiments as garnishes is also a great way to dress up your dish and make it camera ready!
