Biryani would probably be the first thing which came to your mind. I mean, which Pakistani can resist the temptation of some delicious biryani? However, that is incorrect. It might be what Pakistan is most known for, but biryani is considered to be a luxury for the majority of Pakistani families and it is limited to certain regions of Pakistan.
For something to qualify as Pakistan’s national dish, it would have to be the most widely consumed meal all over Pakistan.
Nihari would probably be your next best guess, but that would also be wrong despite its heavenly taste. It too, is limited to large cities in Pakistan and is associated with prosperity for most Pakistanis.
Our next contender is, you guessed it, Chicken Karahi. Sadly, even though we might have perfected our chicken recipes, any type of meat is out of the question for the common man.
So, if meat is out of the question then that might lead you to conclude that Daal Chawal is the winner. Unfortunately, apart from the rising prices of daal, people outside northern Punjab are not very enthusiastic about eating it. Sad, but true!
So then, what is the national dish of Pakistan? Well, it is Saag, and you might be wondering how in the world did that happen. Well, it turns out that saag is inexpensive and is also preferred over other vegetables and lentils. Also, it is consumed in every region of Pakistan. However, in my opinion, such a simple dish does not do justice to our country’s name.
