Sushi has always been a popular dish around the world, and the trend has now caught up fast in Pakistan recently. New restaurants are opening up that only cater to sushi lovers and people are rushing in to develop their taste for the dish which they have heard so much about. BUT, are you even sure if raw fish is safe for you? Let’s find out!
Raw fish has a lot of hazards including parasites and bacteria. Some tropical water fish even have natural toxins that cause neurological damage. However, scientists say that raw fish in sushi is not hazardous as long as it’s prepared according to the rules provided by the Food and Drug Administration. Sushi lovers do not have to worry about getting sick because the restaurants take several steps to handle and prepare the fish. The steps involve freezing the fish at -4°F (-20°C) for seven days or at -31°F (-35°C) for 15 hours, a process which kills all the parasites. A lot of people who do fall sick after eating sushi, are mainly affected by the rice. If rice sits at room temperature, the bacillus cereus bacteria easily spread throughout the rice. Sushi rice has to sit in an acidic bath in a vinegar solution which decreases the PH to 4.1, killing the microbes.
So, I think it’s safe to say that Sushi is safe to eat!
