Everything You Need To Know Emmy Awards 2020

What are the Emmy Awards?

The Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) established the Emmy Awards as part of an image building and public relations opportunity in 1949. The awards are now presented by three bodies: the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS). The Emmy Awards usually refer to the two most coveted awards, the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Daytime Emmy Awards. However, the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards and Regional Emmy Awards are also presented throughout the year. The name Emmy comes from the casual term for an image orthicon, “immy”, a camera tube used in TV production. The Emmy Awards are now held every year in the US and cover the televised releases from June of the previous year until May of the same year.

Who is hosting the Emmy Awards 2020?

Jimmy Kimmel, who has hosted the ceremony twice before, will return as master of ceremonies for the 2020 Emmys.

When are the Emmy Awards 2020 taking place?

The 2020 Emmys will take place on Sunday 20 September 2020 from 8pm EST/5pm PST.

Where will the Emmy Awards 2020 be hosted?

In light of the pandemic, the 2020 Emmys will be “reimagined as a virtual event” this year. In a letter sent to nominees and obtained by Variety, stars were informed that it was “still going to be [the] TV industry’s biggest night out… but we’ll come to you”, in lieu of having actors congregate at the Microsoft Theater in downtown LA. The note continues: “We are assembling a top notch team of technicians, producers and writers to work closely with Jimmy Kimmel and with you and your team, to make sure that we can film with you (and loved ones or whomever else you choose to be with) at your home, or another location of your choice. We’re going to make you look fabulous – we’re exploring the cutting edge of technology to allow [you] to use good cameras and lighting and look forward to working with you to produce your unique ‘on screen’ moments.”

On 24 August, the Emmys producers confirmed to Variety that Jimmy Kimmel would host the awards ceremony from the Staples Centre in LA, but without an audience. The question of whether winners – who will be filmed remotely – will be able to hold their statuette remains up in the air (although there were originally plans to have them delivered during the ceremony). As for the dress code? Given that there’s no red carpet, expect this year to be a more “casual” affair. “If you want to be in your sweats on your sofa that’s also fine,” show producer Ian Stewart said. “It will be much more casual, much more fun, as we’re more in it together. It will go where it goes. We hope really well, but I can’t sit here and say that it’s going to go 100 per cent perfectly because no one’s ever done it before.”

Which stars will take part in the Emmy Awards 2020?

We can look forward to appearances from a host of stars: Oprah Winfrey, Issa Rae, America Ferrera and Black-ish actor Anthony Anderson will all feature in the virtual ceremony, the Television Academy has confirmed. Gabrielle Union and Lena Waithe are also scheduled to appear, and singer-songwriter H.E.R will perform, in her debut Emmys appearance.

Who is invited to the Emmy Awards 2020?

Nominees and their guests are invited to the ceremony, along with media journalists and industry experts.
