Have Eid celebrations changed from what they used to be?

Remember the time when Eid was a festival that was always a place of unrestrained joy. In the simpler times when life was less complicated and easier to handle the celebrations of Eid was the best.  Back in the day when we did not have any cellphones or internet, we would engage more in the festivities and celebrations.  The family affair of sighting the moon, the careful selection of Eid cards, the festive hugs and frantic search of Mehndi Walis is something i would swap for today’s Eid any second.

However over the years there has been a distinct change in the celebration of Eid which you can say some might consider as “unconventional”. The following are the ways in which the celebration of Eid has changed.

No more Kulchas

Our traditional dishes have been replaced by a blend of cuisines. Our Bagirkhanis and Kulchas have been   replaced by pastries and donuts. In the old times people preferred to cook their own meals at home, whereas today it has become a trend to either order food online or to go out to restaurants to eat.

Bomb Selfies
Now that we have the cellphones in our hands, and social networking sites beneath the palm of our hands, the only reason why some get ready is to put on a show for their followers of social media. Back then, it was the joy of getting ready to greet others whereas now it is just so that we can take ‘bomb’ selfies.

Being lazy runs in our blood

Back then it was a must to get up super early in the morning for the eid prayers along with food preparations and house chores. But now, the day before eid we tire ourselves out by getting done with our shopping till late hours and then finally going to sleep at 3 in the morning. Waking up at 12, and wishing everyone Eid Mubarak in your pajamas is the new jam.

Anti-social creatures

Earlier Eid used to be more of a community affair. The whole neighbourhood got together to celebrate Eid. Today, even though we greet people on Eid, the celebration is more of a family affair. People today don’t like to get out of their comfort zones.

More of a selfish celebration

The best part about celebrating Eid was giving charity to those in need. Today people spend a lot on their food and clothes but none of us really care if our neighbours have anything to eat or new clothes to wear. As long as we look good, and our stomachs are filled, it’s a happy Eid for us

While some might disagree with this, it’s a sad truth that over the years Eid is beginning to lose its charm. But there are still some of us existing in this world of change that are carrying the same old traditions and rituals to keep the spirit of Eid alive within us.

EID MUBARAK!!!
