In the world of fashion we are all running after the fanciest of things. For most people, fancy means wearing the trendiest fur top paired with distressed pants, the latest heels with a red sole and a bag that costs more than my car. And the rest of the fashion world is too busy trying to replicate or imitate that. But for one person, fashion is all about ideas. He always thinks out of the box and his mind possesses the kind of creativity that can combine an ordinary piece of fabric with some stones and make it look like something out of this world. And we all know that authenticity and creativity are the two most important tools for a designer.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are talking about Ali Xeeshan. We do not remember any Ali Xeeshan moment from the past where we would have had any reason to doubt his creative genius or polished design skills. On top of all that, he makes sure he always comes up with something that surprises us to the extreme, whether it is a prop, a hot pair of shades, a cute little pup or even going blonde. Yes, you read it correctly; Ali Xeeshan went blonde for PLBW’2015. I was deeply shocked too when I first heard that he had dyed his hair …. And then I saw him. That’s where I was like ‘oh man, this guy rocks’.
At PLBW’2015 he showcased his bridal collection ‘toofan’. We have a lot to say about the collection but before that, it is absolutely necessary to mention here that the ‘bride’ and the ‘groom’ who opened his show were actually Mickey Mouse and Mini Mouse, and on top of that, they were dancing. At that moment, the whole audience was like ‘that is typical Ali Xeeshan’. You can imagine the wave of excitement that went through the entire hall at the very beginning of the collection. Mr. Mickey looked completely suave in his red sherwani, and we are sure Mini (in her ghaaghra cholli) simply couldn’t stop drooling over him.
Coming back to ‘toofan’, let us start with the accessories and props. The kites stole the show as usual. All those colored organzas with heavy embroidery and embellishments extraordinarily spiced up the ramp. And then those multi-colored pieces of jewelry instantly won over our hearts. Last but not the least, Meesha Shafi’s head gear gave a very royal look but it wasn’t entirely a new concept.
As far as the collection itself was concerned, it was like a breath of fresh air. Mostly, trends in the fashion world change very quickly but in Pakistan most of our designers like sticking to the old ones until the public is literally sick of them. The same is the case with ghagras these days. Ali Xeeshan has broken the trend with his one piece formals. Also, we absolutely love how he has broken some age-old bridal rules with baggy sleeves and collar gowns. Toofan was inspired by a mix of Mughal and Rajasthani art, and the entire collection was a reflection of that. Unlike his previous collections, this time the fabrics were not printed and had heavy embellishments. Appliques, colored embroideries and cut-work were very visible. Lastly, the entire collection was a combination of royalty and art, and it added some much needed drama to the show.
