Summers are here and so are the skin problems caused by the heat. Here are the simple yet helpful answers to those problems by the very reliable “Dr Osman Bashir Tahir”.
Q1.What kind of skin regime do you suggest for the summer season?
As its very warm and sunny, I always recommend a good quality sunblock, and sun avoidance. Also, for skin to remain healthy, it is advised to be well hydrated by drinking lots of water and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Q2. How to combat acne and what are the causes behind it?
Acne can only managed, as there is no cure for acne. The top reasons of an acne breakout can be: cosmetics, hormonal problems, stress, applying wrong skin care creams and face washes, genetics and a poor diet. It is important not to self diagnose and self treat with ointments, and to avoid picking on acne as that can lead to scarring. It is advised to seek proper medical advice, following a close-up examination by the doctor to determine the kind of acne, and getting a treatment plan with prescribed medication-if needed. I feel acne is best managed when the patient is also motivated as there is no magic treatment, rather a series of medical skin deep cleansing, light skin peels, lasers and light sessions spaced over two to three months. The goal for the doctor is to treat acne early, so as to reduce the chances of scarring, and to gently promote healthy skin renewal. In severe cases, a course of antibiotics is prescribed, along with a medicated skin cleanser and overnight ointment or gel on the acne lesions.
Q3. What kind of sunblock is important to use for fair and dark skin tones?
There is no different sunblock for different complexions, however the new generation of sunblocks have a mild tint in them to avoid the ‘whitish’ appearance. For acne and oily skin, there are ‘medical’ versions of sunblocks with a gel consistency to avoid worsening the skin.
Q4. Does oily skin have to be moisturized daily?
Oily skin needs to be examined first, as it can be treated with a series of treatments. Moisturizers, especially the brands available over the counter, are beauty products, which can worsen the condition! Unfortunately, people first exhaust all the ‘desi totkas’ before arriving at the doctors clinic, with damaged skin.
Q5. What are some solutions to prevent early aging of skin?
A visit to Dr. OBT’s office 🙂
Q6. What kinds of services are available at your clinic for skin rejuvenation?
There are nonsurgical and surgical ways to rejuvenate skin. For the age group of 20’s and 30’s I advise Skin treatments, lasers and injectables such as botox and fillers. In cases with sagging jawlines, I perform an ultrasound skin tightening treatment. For more severe sagging, a proper surgical facelift gives the best results. Eye-lid surgery gives an overall fresh appearance, especially when one has eye bags.
Q7. How do chemical peels and hydra facial help improve skin conditions?
By removing the dead and damaged skin, which is the topmost layer. This layer is what prevents the skin from absorbing any creams, and which gives the dull appearance. Hydrafacials improve the health of the skin, by exfoliating and nourishing the skin with serums. Peels helps renew skin, removing blemishes and unveiling a healthy layer of skin very gently. These treatments must be done with gaps of 2 weeks, to stimulate the skin and to restore the ‘glow’ one earns for from early youth.
Q8.How effective do you think anti-aging creams are for women?
Anti-Aging creams are extremely effective, but not the ones which are billion dollar brands. The creams which I advise, contain 10 times more efficacy, and give results.
Q9. What kind of vitamins do you recommend for a healthy skin?
If you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the day, drink lots of water, and stay active by performing regular exercise, you do not need any multivitamins.
